VPI Pet Insurance-Top 5 Most Dangerous Holiday Pet Hazards

VPI recently issued a handout regarding the top 5 most dangerous holiday hazards for you pets. Read below or got to VetPetHealth.com

-Keep holiday decorations out of reach-Glass, metal, ribbons, tinsel and artificial snow are dangerous if ingested.

-Beware of cold weather hazards-Keep pets away from antifreeze. Just one lick is enough to kill. Also, wipe your pets paws and tummy after walks to remove salt and chemical residues.

-Keep Table Scraps on the table-Fatty foods can cause stomach problems, while bones can cause obstructions or choking.

-ID your pet-The flow of holiday guests provides an open door for escape. Be sure your pet is microchipped and has current ID tags.

-Place holiday plants high off the ground-Holly, mistletoe, poinsettia, lilies and Christmas tree water can all be toxic if ingested.

Dental month to return in early 2012

Keep an ear and an eye out for Urban Vet Care's next dental month in 2012.

We strongly feel that your pet's dental health is key to maintaining a balanced quality of life. Dental problems can affect many other parts of your pets life.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association's 2010 Article, "February is National Pet Dental Health Month," bad breath in dogs and cats, "might signify a serious health risk, with the potential to damage not only your pet's teeth and gums but its internal organs as well." Their website also states that, "periodontal infections have been linked to diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease and other life threatening disorders. Visit AVMA's website for more information on this topic at www.avma.org

So if your pet's breath is not as fresh as you'd like it to be, or we've suggested a dental cleaning lately, check in with us in January to see when we will be offering our next dental month. We would love to give them the pearly whites that they deserve.

Dr. Naomi Weber talks with 9 News about Heartworm treatment shortage

Dr. Naomi Weber recently spoke with 9 News regarding a recent shortage of the medication used to treat heartworm disease. The piece may seem a bit confusing, but we will try to clear things up. The preventitive medications such as Interceptor and Heartgard are still widely available.

There is, however, a shortage of the medication used to combat heartworm disease once a dog contracts it. All the more reason to stay diligent about giving your dog's monthly heartworm prevention tab. Please feel free to call our office with any questions. Click on the link below for the full story.
